The Power of Collaboration
I don’t believe in a “my way or the highway” approach. It’s still possible to bring exceptional craft and care to someone else’s vision.
Actually, I find collaboration to be truly remarkable.
Collaboration is like weaving together various styles, thoughts, and personalities to create a practical and grounded solution-based creation.
When done attentively, collaboration becomes an imaginative space where ideas flow effortlessly. This is where the magic happens!
But getting to this space takes a deliberate approach. I work to establish and maintain transparent, forward-thinking, and positive relationships with my clients. Communication is always appreciated and reciprocated.
It's also quite common for clients to have a general idea or theme in mind, but be unsure of exactly what they want. In this space collaboration really is the key to success. This is where my experience and trade knowledge come into play, helping them settle into a cohesive and practical direction, but without simply prescribing a solution.
Even moments of struggle or challenge can bring amazing ideas forward. For example, when a client presents an idea but struggles to visualize it, I see a demonstration of care and a desire for fulfillment. In this situation I often offer detailed scaled drawings and finished product samples. In some cases, I even provide mockups or layout options to clarify the product's design or theme.
The value of investing time in visualization, planning, mockups, sample gathering, and ironing out details cannot be overstated. It not only ensures a smoother project execution when we're all on the same page, but also allows for better outcomes once the tools come out!
From my perspective, about 75% of a full custom build lies in this crucial preparation phase. 75%!
That's why collaboration and client management are two skills that lie at the heart of my process. I work closely with my clients to understand their aesthetic preferences, property style, and functional needs. True customization is achieved through this connected working relationship. The better I get to know a client, the more accurately I can create something that truly represents them.
In practical terms, in my opinion a well-executed collaboration always takes place in person. It revolves around genuinely hearing the client's wants and needs. Not just about listening to their words, but truly understanding and empathizing with them. Relating to them. Ensuring they are heard.
It's from this point that ideas really start flowing.
