About donnelly woodworking
- Can you provide examples of your past woodworking projects?
-
Yes, you can view the portfolio on my website or request specific project references to see my work.
- What training or certificates do you hold?
-
I am a journeyman carpenter with a Red Seal certificate and over 20 years in the trade.
- Do you have a crew? Do you hire subtrades?
-
In order to ensure top quality and care goes into every project, I complete as much of the project as I can myself. I generally sub-contract electrical and plumbing work when needed.
- What is your service area?
-
Donnelly Woodworking offers service to central Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. I am also willing to travel when a unique project really sparks some interest outside of this area.
- When can you start?
-
There are many contributing factors in deciding when the project starts. Generally, I build projects one at a time, and on a first come, first serve basis. For specifics, please contact me to discuss your project.
- Are you experienced building decks and outdoor living spaces?
-
Yes! I have extensive experience building custom decks and outdoor living spaces. Donnelly Woodworking is also licensed, insured, and has a strong reputation with past clients (many who become repeat clients!).
- Do you also specialize in finish carpentry, or is your work limited to structural carpentry?
-
Absolutely, finish carpentry is among my expertise. My proficiency encompasses both classical and contemporary millwork techniques, ensuring that every project benefits from my exacting attention to detail and high-quality craftsmanship.
- Can you trim out my entire house or do you just do smaller jobs?
-
I have extensive experience in installing full house trim packages. Big or small, I can help!
My process
- Do you provide detailed estimates for approval?
-
Yes. My quotes are broken down into labour and materials and often provide additional details in an accompanying email. This may include suggested timeliness, material options or details, maintenance requirements, and other information specific to the project.
- Do you offer free consultations?
-
Yes, I will consult at no charge. If the consultation was in say Tofino or somewhere far away I would request some sort of compensation.
I try to keep my consultations no longer than a few hours on site. Although this is really job specific. If it was a “really amazing” project or very large job I would be prepared to spend as much time needed.
- How can I request a quote for a project?
-
You can request a quote by contacting me by email, or phone. I’ll schedule a consultation to discuss your project’s details and provide an estimate.
- How long does it typically take to complete a project?
-
Project timelines can vary based on the scope and complexity. I’ll provide an estimated timeline during the consultation phase.
- What is the process for getting started on a project with Donnelly Woodworking?
-
It all starts with a consultation to discuss your needs and ideas. Once we have a plan and estimate approved, I’ll work with you to turn your project into reality. Just get in touch to begin a conversation.
- Will my construction project be messy? How do you handle the dirty work?
-
Running a tight and well-organized site is of top priority, and I believe and practice “cleaning as you go”. Keeping a clean work site is also much safer, and more efficient in the long run.
- How long does it take to build a small studio or outbuilding?
-
Complete construction process varies on building size, design, and logistics. To properly answer this question we’ll need to get further along the estimation process, which begins by contacting me to discuss your project.
- Do you stain or paint your wooden fences or privacy screens? Is it important?
-
For sure I can take care of the painting and staining of your custom fence or privacy screen project. And yes, I always recommend staining or painting natural wood when left exposed to the elements. A healthy coat of oil, stain, or paint will add numerous years to the lifespan of your project.
- What should I expect during the custom door building process?
-
The process of building a custom door typically involves several stages, including design consultation, material selection, fabrication, and installation. Of course I will keep you informed throughout each stage of the process and ensure that your specific needs and preferences are being met.
- Can you build the foundation for my deck to sit on, or do I need to hire another company for that?
-
Yes, I can build the foundation so you do not need to hire another company. I am experienced in concrete form work, and I build the entire structure from the ground up. In fact, my slogan is From Form to Finish!
- Do you build the railings as well or do I have to hire another company?
-
You bet I take care of the railings. I have experience in building wood and wood/glass railings, and can also install steel or aluminum if that is your preference.
- Will you paint or stain my trim after you install it?
-
Yes I can. Depending on the amount of material, I either apply top coat myself or call in a trusted sub-trade for completion.
Building materials
- Does hardware quality really make a difference?
-
Yes: when it comes to hardware, hinges, handles, etc., you really get what you pay for. I cannot express this enough.
The “off the shelf” cabinet and storage standards have always had me shaking my head. Inferior materials and cheap hardware that generally fails long before it should. Quality hardware also enables a much more efficient install.
Up-selling has never really been one of my strong points, but it is always worth the extra money to hit the next tier of hardware wherever possible. The comfort, finish coatings, and reliability make a huge difference. This is particularly true when there are moving parts like in a cabinet hinge or door handle.
- What species of wood do you typically work with?
-
I work with a variety of wood types, including cedar, fir, pine, oak, and more. I’ll help you choose the best wood for your project.
- How do you ensure the durability and longevity of your woodworking projects?
-
Great question! I use quality materials, follow best practices, and pay close attention to details to ensure the longevity and durability of all projects built by Donnelly Woodworking.
- Do you supply materials, or am I responsible for getting them on site?
-
Generally speaking, all my projects are supply and install so you don’t need to worry about sourcing materials. This also allows me to hand-select materials whenever possible, ideally allowing their inherent characteristics to guide the creative process.
- What types of materials do you use when building a fence or privacy screen?
-
There are a variety of materials that can be used to build a fence or privacy screen, including wood, metal, composite materials, and even concrete. You can learn more on my Fences & Privacy Screens page.
- Is it less expensive to buy and install prefab fence panels?
-
When compared to building a custom wood fence, yes, a fence built using prefabricated panels will be less expensive. Although in my experience, the prefab panels are made with much lesser quality materials and slapped together as quickly as possible. While you might save up-front, the product is mediocre at best, and never stands the test of time.
- Do you install store-bought or prefab gates?
-
Yes, I am happy to install a prefabricated or store-bought gate within your project.
- Do you install automated gates?
-
No, I do not. However, I am happy to collaborate in the installation if there is any additional structural concrete or woodwork to be done.
- What materials can be used to build custom doors?
-
Custom doors can be made from a wide variety of materials. Of course I have a fondness for working with wood, but can also incorporate metal, glass, and even recycled materials. The choice of materials depends on your preferences, budget, and the desired look and functionality of the doors.
- Can you build me a concrete patio or do you only build with wood?
-
Yes. I can complete all of the form work and place the concrete, but would make a call to a trusted sub-trade for the concrete finishing to ensure it’s up to Donnelly Woodworking’s high standards.
- Can you install prefab or flat-pack cabinets?
-
Certainly, I have the capability to install prefabricated or flat-pack cabinets and ensure they are set up properly in your space. However, it’s worth noting that these types of cabinets may sometimes fall short in terms of durability, fit, and unique design characteristics. Custom work allows for higher quality materials, personalized design, and significantly increased longevity.
Design
- Is it okay if I don't have an exact vision of what I want?
-
Absolutely. In fact, it’s pretty common for a client to be a little unsure of what they actually want. They may have more of a broad idea or theme rather than a specific vision of the final result. What I bring is my experience and trade knowledge to settle into a cohesive and practical theme.
Even struggle can bring forward amazing ideas. Struggling shows a sense of care and a desire for fulfillment.
When a client produces an idea, but still cant visualize, I will often offer a detailed scaled drawing and samples of finished product. I can even offer mockups or layout options so that the layout or theme of the product becomes clear.
Whatever the approach, the value in time spent in visualization, planning, mockups, sample gathering, ironing details, is really without parallel. It also allows the project to run much smoother once the tools come out!
- Do you provide design services for custom projects?
-
Yes, I offer design services to help you bring your custom woodworking project ideas to life.
- Can you work with specific design or style preferences I have in mind?
-

Permits & regulations
- Do you provide guidance on how to attain any required permits?

- Do you ensure your projects are compliant with local regulations and zoning laws?
-
Yes. As a professional tradesperson it is my responsibility to inform clients (and potential clients) of any bylaw or permit requirements that I am knowledgeable about. If I am not knowledgeable about a question being asked, I make the effort to find out or point them in the right direction.
- Do I need a permit to build a small structure on my property?
-
In some cases, you will need a building permit from your local jurisdiction to build a small structure on your property. I can help you determine if permits are necessary and ensure that your structure meets all building codes and regulations. Generally speaking, most structures under 100 sq ft will not require a permit, though there are many other conditions that need to be considered so this is only a general rule of thumb.
- How tall can my fence be?
-
Fence heights and location are all governed by local jurisdiction and depend on where they are located on the property line (i.e., front, back, or side yard). In Nanaimo, front yard fences up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) in height are usually allowed, while in side and rear yards fences up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) in height are generally permitted. I am happy to assist in navigating the local bylaw with you.
- Do I need a building permit for my new deck?
-
Yes. Any structural addition, alteration or repair is subject to a building permit. Don’t worry, though – I can help you navigate the regulatory process.
