Decks & Outdoor Living

From a simple structure nestled in a quiet corner of your property to a large gazebo for entertaining, I excel at creating spaces that complement and enhance the natural environment. My deep love and respect for the outdoors is expressed through my carpentry.

Embrace the outdoors

Compliment your landscape

I have a love and respect for the outdoors and our natural environment, and specialize in creating spaces that compliment existing landscapes. I always aim to work with the land, such as wrapping around large rock or water features, or incorporating built-in seating or adding shade structures to address the specific needs or wants of the client and the landscape.

Enhance your lifestyle

Lifestyle plays a big role during the design and consultation process for a deck or outdoor living space. I pride myself on exceptional client management, and the ability to listen and relate to others is how I navigate any requests for customization. I have the ability to work with the land, to tune in, listen and read the landscape. This plays a huge role in creating seamless environments that flow, that are comfortable, and that you never want to leave.

Build with intention

To me, craftsmanship is a lifestyle. It’s a way of showing up in this world, slowing down and remaining mindful of the current moment. These values are reflected particularly well in outdoor spaces. Setting intention before and during each build is an art within itself, and a way of life that is integrated into all aspects of my work.

Elevate your outdoor living

  • Elevated Deck Construction

Elevated decks provide a seamless extension from your home’s first or second floor, offering a walk-out escape.

Elevated decks attach to your existing structure on one side, and are supported by a sturdy post-and-beam frame tied into a concrete footing on the other.

One of the main benefits of elevated decks is the additional space they provide. By building a deck off the ground, you can create a separate area for dining, lounging, or entertaining.

Single-level elevated decks are affordable, space-efficient, and a popular choice for outdoor living spaces. They are an especially smart option if you have a small yard or limited space and are looking to expand.

  • Multi-Level Decks

If you have space or height restrictions, a multi-level deck offers an ideal solution.

As the name suggests, multi-level decks consist of multiple simple elevated decks, each connected by stairs or ramps.

A split-level design adds depth and character to a large deck area, with options for added privacy. And when designing a multi-level deck, it’s especially important to consider the layout and flow of your space.

By incorporating different levels into your deck design, you can create distinct areas for different activities. For example, you could have a lower level for dining and a higher level for lounging or sunbathing.

  • Platform Decks

Platform decks, I would say, stand alone. [Pause for laughter.]

Platform decks are elevated off the ground on all sides. They’re typically built close to the ground, and not attached to any other structure.

One of the main benefits of building a platform deck is that they are so versatile. You can use your deck for a variety of activities, such as dining, lounging, or entertaining.

Platform decks are ideal for creating a flat, usable outdoor space anywhere you wish. For example, near the ocean or lake front, or on a rocky bluff or hillside where the view is great, but there is limited space to enjoy such a view.

  • Pergolas

A pergola is an open-air structure that typically consists of vertical posts or columns supporting a lattice or crossbeam roof.

While all of the framing is open to the elements, they still provide filtered shade and privacy.

Pergolas are often used to define an outdoor space, adding a visual break, texture, and detail to a large area. You can build a pergola as a freestanding structure, or attach one to a building, depending on your property and needs.

Pergolas are also excellent structures for supporting and showcasing your favourite vines and climbing plants.

  • Gazebos

On the West Coast we get a lot of rain, making dry space an absolute premium, and a gazebo can really add comfort and convenience in our often wet climate.

Gazebos are built much like pergolas, consisting of a simple post and beam structure combined with detailed rafters and knee braces. However, gazebos are fully enclosed structures, with walls and a solid, typically waterproof roof.

The walls may be built solid, or can be built of lattice framework or even simple pull-down shades.

By providing shade and protection from the elements, a custom gazebo is an ideal addition to any outdoor living space, offering a comfortable and sheltered space where you can enjoy a meal or simply unwind.

  • Outdoor Kitchens

Here on the Pacific Northwest our summers are short but incredibly sweet. What better way to maximize our outdoor time than with a custom outdoor kitchen?

Perfect for those who love to cook for their family or entertain larger groups, an exterior-grade kitchen typically include a grill, sink, and countertop space for food preparation.

Of course, it really depends on your needs – and that’s the beauty of building custom. I can help you create a space that’s just right for your space and your style.

Outdoor kitchens can incorporate various materials like stainless steel, glass, and stone into your outdoor space, adding a splash of visual interest to summer barbecues and gatherings.

  • Seating Areas

Seating areas provide a place to relax and unwind, and are an essential component of a great outdoor living space.

A custom seating area can be designed to accommodate different activities, such as dining, lounging, or socializing.

With the addition of a built-in seating area there is no need for set-up or take-down, and of course you can customize the size and shape to the exact model you’ve always wanted.

A magnificent stand-alone throne? You bet! Oversized steps nestled into a dropped seating nook? For sure!

Whatever you can imagine, a custom-built seating area will give you space for socializing and entertaining friends and family for years to come.

  • Fire Pits

There’s just something special about sitting around a fire and sharing time with loved ones or oneself, isn’t there?

When safely incorporated into an outdoor seating area or living space, a fire feature can add great value and warmth. (Plus, roasted marshmallows in your own backyard!)

If you like the idea of stretching the outdoor summer season into the cooler fall and winter months on Vancouver Island, a fire pit is certainly a must-have.

A fire pit creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making them equally perfect for enjoying friends and family or spending some quality “you” time while nestled up by the flickering flames.

  • Water Features

Water features can add a sense of tranquility and serenity to your outdoor living space.

The sound of running water creates a calming and relaxing atmosphere, and can transform an outdoor area into a peaceful retreat. Water features also act as a focal point, adding interest and beauty to your space.

You might wonder what a carpenter can do for a water feature.

Imagine a wooden bridge that gracefully spans a gentle stream. A custom deck that overlooks a pond teeming with plant life.

Water features don’t have to be complicated, either: consider the possibility of a rain chain, guiding rainwater in a musical descent from your roof to a garden below.

  • Wooden or Composite Walkways

Wooden or composite walkways can really elevate the aesthetics of a garden or outdoor living area.

Beyond good looks, of course, a walkway also provides a practical and convenient way to navigate your space. They are easily maintained, too.

When designing a walkway, I carefully consider the layout and flow of your space, so it is shaped or bent to seamlessly move through your environment.

Choose the warm, traditional feel of wood or opt for the modern resilience of composite. Either way, I can design and build a walkway that becomes an integral part of your garden’s story.

  • Bath Houses & Outdoor Showers

Bath houses or outdoor showers can be an incredibly special and even intimate addition to your space.

While they are certainly practical if you have an outdoor pool or live near the beach, an outdoor bathing space can also add an intimate, personal retreat and sanctuary to any home.

Moments spent can be equally enjoyable on warm summer days or cool autumn evenings, giving you a chance to unwind and enjoy a moment of tranquility beneath the open sky.

When building a custom outdoor bathing area, I can integrate features like skylights, open-air designs, or even reclaimed wood elements to infuse character into your bathhouse. And I won’t forget the functional features, such as a changing area or storage space, either!
